Network Directory Sort - Version 1.10
General description:
-------------------
This is a directory sort program which works similar to a well-known
utility program for DOS. It WILL function on network drives as well
as on local DOS drives. Currently, it has the following limitations:
(1) It will only sort filenames, but since directories are already
listed separately after filenames on network drives when using
the DIR command, this is not such an aggravating limitation as
it could otherwise be.
(2) Read-only, hidden, and system files are ignored.
(3) It is considerably slower on local DOS drives than on network
drives.
On the other hand, it has the following advantages, (in addition to
working on network drives):
(1) Reverse sorts are possible, and the direction (ascending or
descending) can be applied separately to each sort criteria.
Compatibility:
-------------
The program should run on any IBM-PC/AT compatible. It has been
compiled to take advantage of the more efficient 80186 instructions
found in all but the older IBM-PC/XT compatible machines (which used
an 8088 processor). If there is anyone out there who is still using
an IBM-PC/XT compatible who would like a version which will run on
their machine, just send me a message via CompuServe or by mail and I
will supply it.
The program has been tested on an IBM PS/2 Model 70 running MS-DOS
5.00, and on a network drive with the server running Netware 3++.
Reliability:
-----------
The program does NOT phyically copy the files in order to sort them,
and it does NOT make any direct access to either absolute or logical
sectors. It uses only standard DOS calls, and therefore should be as
safe and reliable as most other programs. If the program is
interrupted while writing changes to disk because of a power failure
or other problem, one or two files may left in a temporary sort
directory. If this happens, just copy them back to the original
directory and delete the temporary directory.
Performance:
-----------
The program works very fast on network drives because Netware will
generally have the file information needed for the DOS calls already
buffered. It does not seem particularly fast on local DOS drives,
however, since it cannot compete with other programs which directly
manipulate the sectors containing the directory structure. Until the
program can differentiate between local DOS drives and network drives
and apply different methods for each, it would probably be more
satisfactory to use a standard commercial product for sorting files
and directories on local drives, and to use this program only for
network drives.
Changes from Version 1.10:
-------------------------
A full-screen interface with mouse support has been added. The
command line capability works just as before, but if the program is
started without any sort options on the command line, then the
full-screen interface is displayed. With the full-screen interface,
file entries can be both sorted automatically or ordered by hand.
Distribution:
------------
The program is freeware, and can be used and distributed freely, but
it may not be sold or modified and incorporated into other programs
for sale. I will, naturally, happily accept any donations that users
feel compelled to give me in order to encourage me to continue
improving the program.
Support:
-------
I will support the program and try to eventually add the missing
features noted above. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
